Did you know the G2 control is used to create a popular line of tattoo machines?

Well known in his industry, Dan Kubin is making unique tattoo machines that sell out typically within the same day he posts them on his website each Wednesday. “I make and sell multiple models of tattoo machines, making about 50 week right now, and still have a hard time keeping up with the demand,” explained Kubin. “A couple of months ago, I purchased a Webb milling machine with an Acu-Rite Solutions MILLPWRG2 control on it from a HEIDENHAIN / Acu-Rite Solutions distributor — Accurate Measurement Systems (AMS) in St. Louis — so that I can more efficiently work on these projects.” Kubin is located in Independence, MO.To many, Kubin’s tattoo machines are reminiscent of the Steam Punk style which embodies futuristic characteristics of an industrial era, often utilizing bright brass and copper. “If it is Steam Punk, that is unintentional. All I can say is that I like this look, as well as the use of brightly colored finishes, and working with brass and copper,” added Kubin who is also a practicing tattoo artist having done both for many years. Kubin started his interest with the tattoo business around 2005 during his time in the Air Force where he served as a machinist and welder. Until recently, Kubin has been designing and developing his tattoo machines manually, then outsourcing the machining. He explained that since he has so many different machine designs with much custom work, and that they keep changing, it had become very frustrating for all involved to keep up with his evolving creativity. “So I finally decided to buy my own milling machine in order to develop my new parts exactly the way I want them, when I want them,” explained Kubin. Kubin visited AMS in St. Louis and decided to buy their new demo machine right off the floor. “It blew me away,” added Kubin. “This machine with the G2 control allows me to do all kinds of things right in my home shop. With it now, I use it for rapid prototyping. I have the two-axis version so I am able to [...]

The University of Pittsburgh upgrades research machine shop with MILLPWRG2

“Most people don’t realize that large universities have five or even ten machine shops throughout their campus. Some are education centers where students are trained on machinery. Other shops work for the university or even lend themselves outside of the university.” This insight was shared by our valued distribution partner, Gary Kinkela, President of Kinkade Inc. when he was discussing his recent installation of two Acu-Rite Solutions products at the University of Pittsburgh. Gary visited the University of Pittsburgh to meet with familiar faces and discuss their machine shop needs candidly. It became apparent that one of the shops faced challenges with its current equipment, particularly with a bed mill that featured an out-of-date control system. “The previous setup was old. It was aging technology. Parts could not be replaced, and the capabilities just weren’t there,” shared the shop manager, Shawn Artman. Shawn’s machine shop supports the unique machining and assembly requirements for the University’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. He elaborated, “We support the labs and research teams. We’ve built parts to support research for Quantum Physics and, we’ve created equipment for the Geology department to study frogs and fish underwater. Anything the school needs to be fixed or built, we do it.” After their initial shop walkthrough, Gary recommended replacing their legacy bed mill control with the MILLPWRG2. The MILLPWRG2 is a powerful yet easy-to-operate CNC retrofit system for knee mills and bed mills. The MILLPWRG2 offers faster set-ups, shorter run times, and a major boost in productivity. The upgraded MILLPWRG2 also opens the door to more advanced machining capability at the University of Pittsburgh. “We use MasterCAM, and the old system did not work with that, but Acu-Rite Solutions does,” Shawn shared. Gary further explained, “Many controls cannot locally handle the data loaded into machines from the central computer systems. G2 can. We have leapfrogged over the capability of the previous system. The G2 is also really simple for machinists to work with, and it can easily bridge to HEIDENHAIN controls. So if they ever [...]

Entry to advanced: A machinist’s career growth via Acu-Rite Solutions

Education and training are essential and unending in the world of manufacturing. Whether just beginning training or being a seasoned machinist, it’s crucial to keep skills up-to-date and to adapt to advancing manufacturing technologies. With the right training and tools, manufacturers can unlock the ability to run more advanced machines and achieve greater success in their field. The Acu-Rite Solutions product catalog allows learners to grow into and layer on more advanced features as they master the basics. Richard Brown, Machine Tool Instructor at Horry-Georgetown Technical College, shared his perspective on progressive product training at the college: “The program actually takes you from the foundational skills all the way through completion of programming CNC” … “Here we feel like you need the foundational skills so that if something goes wrong with the program, you know how to adjust it. Acu-Rite Solutions is good to teach on because it gives the student, right in their face, what’s happening as they’re moving the dials. Once they get that, you no longer see them watching the dials. You see them just watching the screen and they know exactly where it’s at when they’re cutting the parts.” You can support a machinist’s career path, from entry-level to advanced, by pairing the trainee with various products in the Acu-Rite Solutions catalog. Let’s step through the sample progressive product training below. Entry-Level: Manual Input Systems One of the first steps in manufacturing education is gaining experience with manual machine tools. This entry-level exposure allows individuals to learn the fundamentals of machining, including tool selection, work holding, and toolpath creation. For trainees newer to manufacturing, Acu-Rite Solutions offers a range of entry-level manual input systems that are ideal for shop classes, production environments, and small shops. The DRO100, DRO203, DRO300, and droPWR are digital readout systems that allow users to quickly and accurately measure workpiece dimensions. The TURNPWR and MILLPWRG2 systems are CNC retrofit packages that can be added to existing manual machine tools to enable CNC capabilities. By mastering these manual input systems first, trainees will establish a foundational understanding of basic machine functions. [...]

USA Luge uses G2 to keep sleds competition ready

Put into use last year in the USA Luge Association’s Park City, Utah, location, the MILLPWRG2 is helping in the process in making parts and components for TEAM USA’s sleds, used to fly down racing chutes all over the world! “In our workshop, I make a lot of parts, that make the parts, that make the parts for our team sleds,” explained Jon Owen, Technical Director for the USA Luge Association in Utah. “I also make a lot of jigs and workholding pieces needed for our processes, as well as parts directly for the sleds. That’s the machining world.” Owen has a special love for USA Luge, since prior to becoming a staff member for the USA Luge Association about 20 years ago, he himself was a member of the 1988 Olympic Team that competed in Calgary, Canada. “That was a thrilling experience,” said Owen. “Luge is a special sport; incredible precision is needed at all levels.” And precision truly is the name of the game. “Racing is very precise, as is our equipment,” explained Owen who adds that his Utah facility operates a Luge track, handles training and equipment, as support to the national organization in Lake Placid, NY. “In USA Luge, we are timed to thousandths of a second. When you are talking thousandths of a second, thousandths of an inch matter too. “So many of our parts need to be extremely precise, and while our donated Republic Lagun milling machine was working great in our workshop for the past few years, it was only manual. After further discussions, ACU-RITE Solutions donated a G2 control to add to it, and Republic Lagun generously retrofitted it for us last year. We so appreciate the help we receive from our sponsors. Without them, we couldn’t do all that we do.” With the retrofitted machine control, Owen can now do more. “What I really like about this G2 is that, with it, I can very easily switch back and forth between manual work and some CNC. Once we got it in-house, it was quick to learn, [...]
